In Tune with God: the art of congregational discernment

“Discernment is the practice of tuning in to God’s deepest desires for the world. It is the art of recognizing where God is already at work and of discovering what God is calling us to do or be in our own place and time. It is the discipline of aligning our decisions and our actions with God’s. Congregational discernment is the application of this practice to decisions made in and by the congregation. “ p. 1, In Tune with God
My long-standing interest in how congregations approach discernment and decision-making led to the writing of In Tune with God: the Art of Congregational Discernment, published in 2004 by Mennonite Publishing Network.
In it I explore what discernment is, and the ways our understandings of God, God’s Will, and the People of God affect our discernment together. I suggest ways of approaching a discernment process with an attitude of creative, prayerful play, as well as specific tips for healthy group interactions. Dialogues for two “holy fools” introduce each chapter in a light-hearted mode, opening the way for congregations to discuss their own discernment and decision-making practices.
